Barosperse™
BARIUM SULFATE FOR SUSPENSION

Rx only

Barosperse Description

Barosperse is a vanilla flavored barium sulfate product for use as a contrast medium during x-ray diagnosis of the gastrointestinal tract. An aqueous suspension of the product is to be prepared at the time of administration.

The contrast medium contains 95% barium sulfate USP, dispersing and suspending agents, flavoring, simethicone, and saccharin sodium. Barium sulfate has the empirical formula of BaSO4.

Barosperse - Clinical Pharmacology

Barium sulfate is an insoluble material which, because of its density, provides a positive contrast during x-ray examination. Barium sulfate is an inert radiopaque material which is not absorbed or metabolized and is eliminated intact from the body in a manner similar to other non-absorbed inorganic materials. Excretion rate is a function of gastrointestinal transit time.

Indications and Usage for Barosperse

Barosperse is indicated for use as a contrast medium in x-ray diagnosis of the gastrointestinal tract.

Contraindications

Barium sulfate products are contraindicated in patients with known or suspected obstruction of the colon, known or suspected gastrointestinal tract perforation, suspected tracheoesophageal fistula, obstructing lesions of the small intestine, pyloric stenosis inflammation or neoplastic lesions of the rectum, recent rectal biopsy, or known hypersensitivity to barium sulfate formulations.

Barium sulfate suspensions should not be used for infants with swallowing disorders or for newborns with complete duodenal or jejunal

Uses For Barosperse Enema

Barium sulfate is a radiopaque agent. Radiopaque agents are used to help diagnose certain medical problems. Since radiopaque agents are opaque to (block) x-rays, the areas of the body in which they are localized will appear white on the x-ray film. This creates the needed distinction, or contrast, between one organ and other tissues. The contrast will help the doctor see any special conditions that may exist in that organ or part of the body.

Barium sulfate is taken by mouth or given rectally by enema. If taken by mouth, it makes the esophagus, the stomach, and/or the small intestine opaque to the x-rays so that they can be "photographed". If it is given by enema, the colon and/or the small intestine can be seen and photographed by x-rays.

The dose of barium sulfate will be different for different patients and depends on the type of test. The strength of the suspension and tablet is determined by how much barium they contain. Different tests will require a different strength and amount of suspension (some may require the tablet form), depending on the age of the patient, the contrast needed, and the x-ray equipment used.

Do not suddenly stop taking Baclofen. Sudden withdrawal may cause serious and possibly life-threatening side effects, including high fever; confusion; changes in mental status; and muscle stiffness and spasms that, in rare cases, have progressed to serious muscle problems, multiple organ failure, and death. If you experience any of the symptoms listed above, seek immediate medical attention. It is important to ensure that this drug is not stopped suddenly by learning how to properly use the pump, refilling the pump on time, and being aware of the pump alarms and what to do if the pump alarm goes off. This is especially important for certain patients who are at greater risk (eg, spinal cord injuries at T-6 or above, communication difficulties, history of withdrawal symptoms from either oral or intrathecal baclofen). Keep your scheduled refill visits and talk with your health care provider about early withdrawal symptoms.

Baclofen is used for:

Treating severe muscle spasms due to a variety of causes, including brain or spinal cord injuries.

Baclofen is a muscle relaxant and antispastic agent. It reduces the frequency and severity of muscle spasms that occur as a result of neurological disorders, such as multiple sclerosis.

Brand Names: Beyaz, Safyral

What is drospirenone, ethinyl estradiol, and levomefolate?

Drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol prevent ovulation (the release of an egg from an ovary) and also cause changes in your cervical and uterine lining, making it harder for sperm to reach the uterus and harder for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus.

Levomefolate is a type of B vitamin that is normally found in foods. Levomefolate helps prevent a rare birth defect that could occur in a baby if the pregnancy occurs while taking birth control pills or shortly after stopping them.

Drospirenone, ethinyl estradiol, and levomefolate is used as contraception to prevent pregnancy. The Beyaz brand of this medication is also used to treat moderate acne in women who are at least 14 years old and have started having menstrual periods, and who wish to use birth control pills to prevent pregnancy.

Beyaz is also used to treat the symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), such as anxiety, depression, irritability, trouble concentrating, lack of energy, sleep or appetite changes, breast tenderness, joint or muscle pain, headache, and weight gain. Beyaz will not treat symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS).

Generic Name: bivalirudin (bye VAL i roo din)
Brand Names: Angiomax

What is bivalirudin?

Bivalirudin keeps the platelets in your blood from coagulating (clotting) to prevent unwanted blood clots that can occur with certain heart or blood vessel conditions.

Bivalirudin is used to prevent blood clots in people with severe chest pain or other conditions who are undergoing a procedure called angioplasty (to open blocked arteries).

Bivalirudin may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

What is the most important information I should know about bivalirudin?

Do not use this medication if you are allergic to bivalirudin, or if you have any major bleeding from a surgery, injury, or other medical trauma. Bivalirudin is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. However, aspirin is usually given with bivalirudin, and aspirin can cause bleeding when it is taken during the last 3 months of pregnancy. Aspirin can also cause side effects in a newborn baby.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment with bivalirudin and aspirin.

Before using bivalirudin, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs, or if you have heart disease, kidney disease, or a bleeding or blood clotting disorder such as hemophilia.

Benzocaine/Pyrilamine/Zinc Oxide is used for:

Temporarily relieving pain, itching, and swelling caused by minor skin irritation (eg, insect bites, minor rashes, eczema). It is also used to dry the oozing and weeping of poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac.

Benzocaine/Pyrilamine/Zinc Oxide is a topical anesthetic, antihistamine, and skin protectant combination. It works by numbing the skin and reducing swelling.

Do NOT use Benzocaine/Pyrilamine/Zinc Oxide if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Benzocaine/Pyrilamine/Zinc Oxide or to other topical anesthetics (eg, lidocaine)

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Benzocaine/Pyrilamine/Zinc Oxide:

Some medical conditions may interact with Benzocaine/Pyrilamine/Zinc Oxide. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Benzocaine/Pyrilamine/Zinc Oxide. Because little, if any, of Benzocaine/Pyrilamine/Zinc Oxide is absorbed into the blood, the risk of it interacting with another medicine is low.

Ask your health care provider if Benzocaine/Pyrilamine/Zinc Oxide may interact with other medicines that you take
